A poker game involves betting on a combination of 5 cards. The value of the hand varies in inverse proportion to its mathematical frequency, with a high-frequency but weak combination being more valuable than a low-frequency but strong one. Players may place bets that they have the best hand and others must call or concede, or they can bluff by wagering that they do not have the strongest hand. In both cases the player with the highest poker hand wins the pot, i.e. the total amount of bets placed at each round.

A round of betting starts after all players receive 2 cards face down. This is called the flop. There are 2 mandatory bets called blinds put into the pot by players to the left of the dealer. Then each player can discard up to 3 cards. You have a pair of kings. They aren’t good off the deal but you can make a straight or a flush with them.

It’s important to be able to read your opponents at the poker table. This will help you determine whether they are conservative (only calling when their cards are good) or aggressive (making a lot of bets early in the hand). A few classic tells include shallow breathing, sighing, flaring nostrils, blinking excessively, flushing red and eye watering. Players who shake their heads a lot and put their hands over their mouths usually have a strong hand while those who stare you down probably have a weak one.
