Poker is a card game in which players place bets by putting chips into the pot. Players may also call, raise, or drop out of a betting round; the last player to do so collects the pot without having to reveal their hand. A game of poker can be a lot of fun and requires a great deal of skill. A good poker strategy includes keeping detailed records of your wins and losses. This helps you understand your performance and move up or down in stakes accordingly.

The game was brought to England by General Schenck, according to Blackridge. He was a frequent guest at Somerset country estates and convinced other guests to play the game during weekend retreats. He wrote a set of rules for his visitors, which was published soon afterward.

In addition to the cards, poker is played with poker chips of varying values. A white chip (or the lightest-colored chip) is worth one ante or blind bet; a red chip is worth five whites; and a blue chip is worth twenty or more whites. Players buy in for a certain amount of chips at the start of the game.

A player may fold if they do not have a winning hand, but can also bet a large sum, or all of their chips—called going all-in—to stay in the game until a showdown. In the event of a showdown, players reveal their hands and the player with the highest-ranked poker hand takes the pot.
