Poker is a card game in which the player makes bets with chips, which represent money, to compete for a winning hand. The game has many variants, but they all share some core characteristics. The basic rule is that each player has five cards to use in a combination of hands, called a \u201cpoker hand\u201d. A poker hand ranks in order of the highest to lowest; it can consist of two pairs or three of a kind. The game also allows players to add additional cards to their hands, or \u201cwild cards\u201d that can take on any suit or rank they desire.<\/p>\n
In a standard game of poker, players begin by making forced bets, usually an ante and a blind bet. The dealer then shuffles the cards and deals them out one at a time, starting with the player on their left. The cards may be dealt either face up or down, depending on the rules of the game.<\/p>\n
Each player then looks at their cards and compares them to the hands of other players. If a player thinks they have the best hand, they will raise their bet, or \u201ccall,\u201d to match the previous player\u2019s bet.
