Taking some of the basic formulas from Goodfellas and applying them to another type of mob story, Casino focuses on the men who controlled the casinos in Las Vegas and their eventual downfall due to greed, lust and hubris. Robert De Niro gives an outstanding performance as the bookie Ace Rothstein and Joe Pesci is as volatile as ever as his mob partner, Nicky Santoro.
Casino is a fascinating true story of the mafia’s relationship with Las Vegas and was based on a non-fiction book written by Nicholas Pileggi, who had full access to the man who ran four casinos for the mafia in the 1970s and inspired much of this movie. Often playing like a documentary, the first hour of the film lays bare the intricate web of corruption that centered in Las Vegas and had tendrils reaching out to politicians, Teamsters unions, the Chicago mob and the Midwest mafia.
Aside from the incredible acting by De Niro and Stone, this movie has a great supporting cast, especially Rita Ryack, who does a terrific job of creating Ginger McKenna’s character from a streetwise, brassy, physically striking hustler to a slightly more glamorous cocktail dress then a tackier white leather miniskirt as her drug-infused weight loss sets in.
